Rematch of Redemption
By Brian Dusel
The turkey has been put away and now it’s time to put up some lights and get excited for the biggest moment in December… WrestleSeries! But, we have a couple more stops before we get there, and Friday at 6 pm SLT on VWE Edge, the excitement is at its apex with just seven days before the biggest VWE show of the year, and this week, former World Champions, the current World Heavyweight Champion, and future Champions are in action. So let’s just jump right in.
In a surprising turn of event, Lexi Wicked, the same woman who main evented Primetime just two days ago is in action against, this time against Sybille Halsey. Sybille is agile and quick on her feet, and we did have a chance to speak to Lexi, wondering if she would be up to the challenge of being double-booked this week for matches.
Brian: After a big main event on Primetime, you will be in the opening match of Edge, do you think you’re ready for that? Are you at 100%?
Lexi: Really? I should pour this venti no foam half calf pumpkin spice no foam latte with extra nutmeggy goodness heated extra hot to 250 degrees straight down your hairy back, of course, I’m ready to defeat this idiot, what kind of question is that bye!
So clearly confidence is not lacking in Ms. Wicked, but confidence alone cannot win matches. Hopefully, she’ll have a strategy to back up that headstrong attitude of her’s.
Mr. Hollywood likes to think that he is not just a star in the making, but that the spotlight should always shine upon him. And after a really impressive debut on Edge, now he gets perhaps the biggest challenge of his career in the form of a former VWE World Heavyweight Champion, “The Crusader” Vince Easterwood. Vince is widely-regarded as one of the best mat technicians in the professional wrestling industry. While Hollywood does have youth on his side, he has the height and weight advantage, but if Easterwood can get past Mr. Hollywood’s reach, get inside and grapple him, Hollywood could be seeing a box office bomb rather than Vince seeing the World Premiere. We did have a second to speak to Hollywood while the director of photography was resetting a couple of shots.
Brian: This week you are facing arguably the best mat technician in VWE history. What are you thinking heading into a match with him?
Hollywood: I got nothing to say at this moment, I am needed on the set.
Unfortunately, that was not the answer we were looking for, but hopefully, he keeps it in mind as he sets to craft a solid strategy for dealing with Vince. But, his director called him back to set and his agent was unwilling to expand on the quote. We’ll see if the script Mr. Hollywood has written will lead him to victory.
It seems like Krystal, didn’t want to play by any else’s timetable in challenging for the VWE Women’s World Championship, but she also didn’t want anyone else, like Hilary Lanfier, to get an opportunity before she decided she was ready. Unfortunately, Stuart Warf, the VWE CEO, threw a wrench in that plan, setting up a Triple Threat Match for WrestleSeries IX, but Mr. Warf did set up a Beat the Clock Challenge, where Krystal set a great time with ten minutes. And then on Wednesday, Chloe Valentine was ready to capture the victory in less than 10 minutes, but Krystal had to get involved, slapping Alexandra, causing a DQ. Friday, Hilary Lanfier competes in the final Beat the Clock Challenge for a mystery benefit for the match at WrestleSeries, and she’ll be going one-on-one with Nadie. If Nadie takes the victory or can hold out for more than 10 minutes, Krystal will have secured that “advantage”. We did catch up to Hilary to ask her thoughts about this match.
Brian: You’ve had a big year, winning Queen of the Arena, instantly cashing in for a shot at the Radiance Championship. So it is fair to say that you’ve seen almost everything there is to see. What is the biggest threat that Nadie brings into her matches that you’re on the lookout for?
Hilary: I have accomplished big things this year. 2017 may be coming to an end, but things are just getting started for me. When I win the women’s world championship at Wrestle Series, that will be the clarification that 2017 was the year for Hilary Lanfier. And as for Nadie, I expect nothing from her other than laying flat on the mat for the 3 count when I defeat her in less than a minute.
If you go back to the Elimination Royale, there are a couple things that stick out in your mind. One might be the ending of the Royale match, seeing three people fall out over the top rope at the same time. But, guaranteed you’re also thinking about the match of the night, and match of the year nominee, Cody Houley successfully defending the VWE World Heavyweight Championship against Braden Karsin. Braden has gone through a sort of metamorphosis in these past couple months. It appeared that being the World Champion caused Karsin to believe his own hype, going so far to call himself “The King” but losing the title has given him a chance to reflect. Even at Elimination Royale, he was no longer “The King” and came out more like himself, like the Braden Karsin of the classic era. He is the guy you can count on to flip off random things, throwing his body and personal well-being into the air and excite the crowd. When people booed “The King”, it was probably because they missed this version of one of their favorite personalities. This Friday, we will see Braden Karsin facing Cody Houley again, just one week before Cody is set to defend the Championship. This match won’t be for the title, but think what kind of damage Braden could do to Houley’s mindset if he walks out with the victory? The momentum stopped in its tracks. Cody must be pretty upset that he is having to work harder, while his opponent Derrick appears to be being protected. Cult’s last match was on November 10th. So before the biggest match of the year, Derrick will have had three weeks off. We were lucky enough to speak to both Braden and Cody about this match.
Brian: Braden, this is your first time facing Cody since losing your rematch for the World Title against him back at the Elimination Royale. What were some mistakes you made then that you are hoping not to repeat this time?
Braden: Facing Cody has always been interesting for me. Yes, Cody is World Heavyweight Champion, and yes, he has beaten me for that same title, but I am a different person now and I know for a fact that every time he and I step in that ring, face to face, you are going to see a match you have never seen before. So what am I gonna do different, you ask? It is simple; beat the hell out of him.
Brian: At Elimination Royale you defeated Braden for the second time, retaining the World Heavyweight Championship, which has been nominated for Match of the Year. It’s clear to see why the fans should be excited about this match-up, but what are your thoughts heading into this contest?
Cody: I did defeat Braden at the Royale for the second time, which is why I find it insane that I’ve put in this match again a week before my huge match at Wrestleseries. However, yet again, we’re going to steal the show this week. I have respect for Braden because he is one of the best in the VWE. I shook his hand after our last match because he gave me a run for my money, and we tore the house down. I’m looking forward to doing it again and beating him one more time.
And there we have it, some great matches coming up this Friday. When it comes to looking forward to WrestleSeries, we know that Kieran Darkwatch will battle Jayson Rain in a Street Fight, that the VWE Women’s World Championship will be decided in a Triple Threat Match, that we’ll see a Falls Count Anywhere Match between DavidHawk Actor and Benja Nirvana, and that Derrick Cult will look to become a 4-time VWE World Champion when he battles Cody Houley. So there is still much to decide, matches to be made and bitter rivals to pit against each other. With only one week til WrestleSeries, anything can happen. Make sure to be there live to see VWE Edge this Friday at 6 pm SLT to see what else we can expect in one week.
